Florida fans got a reprieve for the season opener.
The SEC announced Thursday that Southern Miss at Florida on Sept. 2 will be played at 6 p.m. as originally scheduled.
The Sun reported last week that the league was considering several options to live up to the television contract with Lincoln Financial (formerly Jefferson Pilot). The 12:30 p.m. slot on Sept. 2 needed an SEC game and Florida's opener was one that was asked to move.
Florida turned down the request as did Alabama, which has a home game with Hawaii that day. As a result, it was left to the league's commissioner to determine what game would be played in the 12:30 slot.
Florida officials pleaded with the league to leave the Southern Miss game at 6 p.m. when the heat index would not be so overwhelming. Mike Slive made the decision this week before going on a vacation to Ireland on Wednesday.
Georgia and Western Kentucky will play in the 12:30 game on Sept. 2.
