  4. Some player comments...

I have a friend whose son is finishing up his 3rd year on the Gators. This player is not a star, but is a great kid and an incredible student. He has no personal agenda, not considering transferring due to playing time or disagreements and is respected by all. I have been conversing with his father all season about rumors and asking for insight and he has been kind enough to give me certain things that did not seem important or pertinent but did pan out (he told me Sturgis was done for the season in early October, yet we heard for weeks he may play - and he told me a week before Rainey came back that he would be back for UGA and was practicing at RB with the first unit). He just told me there is a player that will transfer after the season (a player that has started some games - but asked that I not post the name of the player).

I asked him to comment on the information posted by Naphta. Here are the original statements and with the applicable response by the player visa vi the Father. Again - this is just another perspective and is not meant to undermine Naphta. I guess it is kind of like a bank being robbed and the police get three different descriptions of the robber from the bank patrons. There is no doubt there was a robbery - everybody sees it from their perspective.

The tale I've been told is one of locker room quarrels. There was a split that occurred between younger and older players that did not heal during the season. It didn't involve simply Powell, Easley, and Floyd. There were several others who grumbled, griped about playing time (not unusual) but it turned into factionalism and locker room strife. There were several fist fights... (Player said there were no more fights this year than his previous years, but there are some players that do not "like" each other. He did say that also was the case in previous years, but there was better Player leadership to squash it. He did say that there is always some talk between the offensive players and the defensive players and the offense is very frustrated, so tensions are a little higher than normal - losing doesn't help.)

There were players that essentially "quit" on one of the quarterbacks late in the season. A section of players felt a certain QB was too aloof and "laid back" to lead the team, and ended up trying to isolate him, and did not work hard when he was playing…. (Player said he never saw that and never heard that - again this is an offensive player on the team and sees things first-hand)

Contrary to statements by the Austin, there were massive changes on the defensive side of the ball, which caused confusion to veteran players, especially in the LB corps, where Durkin essentially changed the MLB defensive calls... (player did not have a comment, but did say there were changes on defense, but had not heard this was really a big issue.)

  5. Some player comments part 2:

There developed a deep split in the offensive coaching staff that boiled just under the surface between new coaches and legacy coaches. This developed into a tense and often difficult working relationship. Everyone attempted to maintain a professional demeanor, but this did not always suffice... (This was an interesting response - player said there definitely was a feeling that there was tension between offensive coaches and there were even times recently where one assistant coach just kept going through the position drills and did not even respond or acknowledge Addazio when Addazio questioned something or was giving his opinion to that Assistant Coach)

A starting offensive player's guardian is reporting that the WR's have "been confused all season." Loeffler/Azzanni implemented "longer" routes, but the WR's were confused on their keys very often, which led to broken patterns, WR not being where they were supposed to be... (Player said any confusion was not because of material changes to routes. Player said injuries and poor blocking caused a lot of WR's to be switched around and that caused some confusion, but did not think confusion on pass routes was a big issue)

The same player's guardian told us there were veterans, who were not always all giving maximum effort because they had become disheartened by the divisions on the team, and due to mounting losses that put UF's season goals out of reach. Meyer eventually openly questioned their toughness. One of those players is a prominent starting OL. The FSU debacle was the result of a team with significant numbers of players that had essentially given up on the season... (Player said never saw this and coaches would never allow this on offense - never - emphasized this was never evident. Player said Meyer and Addazio always push players and always question toughness.)

Several players are saying that Addazio has obvious favorites who cannot be questioned and whose poor play does not end up in a chance for someone else. This is an ordinary gripe in most seasons, but during this season there has been a serious uptick in these kinds of complaints, and, true or false, it has affected team morale... (Player said all coaches - even Meyer - even his HS coach had favorites and players do become annoyed. He did say that the offensive players love Addazio, but there will always be questions. He said that there were players last year that sometimes questioned why Timmy tucked the ball and ran when there were WR's open downfield on a particular play.)

Player's parents saying that Meyer HAS to make an OC move, or some of the parents of younger offensive players will consider "pulling" their kids. While I feel that Daz will return (due to his relationship with Meyer), I'm beginning to think he has to be reassigned and given some kind of ceremonial title. The goodwill generated as a program caretaker is gone... (Player said he has not heard this - but some young WR's question the number of plays that DT gets each game.)

Several are saying that, whatever the reality is, the perception on the recruiting trail is that the team has talent that is being mismanaged on offense, and that the continued strong statements in Addazio's defense are having a negative effect on recruiting. In defense of Addazio, I feel he is a strong OL coach and a very strong recruiter, and should be reassigned, given another opportunity... (Player had no real comment - said recruits this year are like other years, asking about playing time, classes, girls, etc. - nothing different from what he sees other than watching UF lose)

  6. Some player comments part 3:

Meyer's direct involvement had declined somewhat until the 3rd loss, and then he became re-engaged in a major way, recognizing that his assistants had no cohesion and no ability to resolve issues among themselves. By the time he involved himself directly in all phases, as in years past, many of the issues were too far gone to fix this year... (Player agreed with this saying that Meyer is more engaged now than when the season started and has become more vocal as well - openly angry).

Rumors that Meyer was a knowing "caretaker" over the program during a transition year and that he intends to leave are completely false. If anything, he's learned that his direct oversight over all phases is necessary to field a winning team... (Player said he believes Meyer wants to be at UF for many years and Meyer often mentions how lucky and grateful he is to be at UF - stating players should feel the same).

Some Assistants will go. Information is very tight. Anyone claiming to know what the coaching changes will be is BS-ing you. No one knows. Some preliminary thoughts have been communicated to Foley, it seems, who is helping Meyer develop a list of candidates... (Player was not aware of any rumors around coaches and nothing is being talked about, other than Coach McCarney leaving)

One source contradicts the idea that there is a team schism along QB lines, and that the players are actually indifferent to who plays QB, but recognize that the offense is not conducive to showcasing their skills... (Player - again an offensive player, states there is no trouble, other than they want to move the ball and score....but some off the O-line like it better when there is a mobile QB in the backfield - several reasons given but no need to post here - no big revelations)

However, the vast majority of sources have stated that they have been told of fierce conflict that began to build between Brantley and Reed, that over time erupted into a civil war on the team over QB. The conflict escalated after Vanderbilt... (Player said this is simply not true and said JB actually tries to help Reed in practice).

  7. If Meyer spends this next month on the fucking Gator Bowl and this team vs. making changes to take effect next season, I'm gonna blow a fucking gasket.

  18. listened to am sports in jacksonville this morning and they said adazzio would be with the team next year but not as oc. Said brantley is trying to graduate by spring to transfer to div1 and that jordan reed will take all the snaps in the bowl game except for a few option plays with burton not sure how true this is but they seemed confident in what they were talking about

  19. TEN SEC Teams made a bowl game, leaving only Vanderbilt and Mississippi out. Ridiculous. Not ridiculous good, ridiculous as in there are way too many bowls. Three of the SEC teams that made a bowl are 6-6 and sub .500 in conference play. Awful.

  20. i hate bowl games
Rather than get weeks of intriguing, high-stakes playoff games played in raucous on campus stadiums, we get one-off bowl games in rarely sold-out municipal stadiums with curious matchups based on ticket sales, potential TV ratings and all sorts of other things that don’t involve actual on-field accomplishment.

We miss Wisconsin barreling along as a matchup nightmare. Or TCU having to prove itself. Or the excitement of LSU at Oklahoma, the winner to visit Oregon. Or Andrew Luck, Terrelle Pryor and Ryan Mallett shining on a national stage. We miss out on endless subplots, storylines and upsets. We get a sport where it isn’t proven on the field.

  21. Let's not be so quick to jump to diminish the greatest regular season in all of sports Mike.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why do you guys care if bowls happen that you don't watch?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with you Jamie. I like the regular season how it is cause it means so much, you lose one game and most likely you are not winning a NC.
I also think there is a solution to appease both the bowl fans and the ones that want a playoff.
First you start off by taking the 11 conference winners plus which ever team is ranked highest in the BCS.
Second you seed them 1-12 and give the top four seeds a bye.
Third the first two rounds of the playoffs are played at the top seeds stadium. The last two rounds (3 games) are played at either the Orange, Rose, Sugar, or Fiesta. With three of them getting a game each and rotating every year on which one gets the NC.
Fourth, what ever bowl out of the four major one that did not get a game would get to pick whatever two teams that did not make the playoffs to play in that bowl. All the other teams that did not make the playoffs still get to play in the crappy bowls.
That should make both the bowl people happy as well as playoff people but it will never happen cause there is too much politics and corruption at the top level.

  24. There are 120 FBS teams. 35 bowl games means 70 teams play. That is 58% of all of FBS. Lame.

  25. im all about how great the regular season is but the post season sucks there has to be a middle ground check out this article i think it would make for a better season then what we have now and would also make for some great matchups that have meaning at the end of the year

  26. and any team not in the playoffs can go play in a meaningless bowl game like they do now

  27. So Mike that article basically says the same thing I said so I should write my own article from now on.

  28. Coach Meyer, I thank you and wish you the best.

  29. Mike, that would totally change the regular season.

    1. Auburn could have rested all their starters in the Bama game cause they had the SEC West locked up. That game would not have mattered.

    2. The losses LSU had to Bama and Auburn would not matter much. Those were HUGE games.

    3. The VTech losses to Boise State and ECU would not even matter!

That would certainly change the greatest regular season in all of sports.
